Thank You Notes vs. Email

Why should you consider using thank you notes? It is so easy just to send a quick email and say thanks.  By sending a fast and painless email, you can get that thank you done in a minute and not have to worry about buying postage stamps or locating where you placed the business card with the intended snail mail address.

For all the reasons why it is so easy to use email it is even more important to use thank you notes when you want to make a real impact.  The reason?  Fewer and fewer people are sending notes to people.

Forget the .42 cent stamp.  These days, anyone going on a job interview will want to differentiate themselves from other candidates.  This is one small way to do so.  I remember, about a year ago, I interviewed for a senior level position that I eventually accepted.  I believe one of the reasons why I landed the job was the thank you notes and the attention to detail.  I sent a thank you note to each and every person I met with along with something personal about our visit together.  I think I sent about 10 notes in all.

Making an impact with others can and should go beyond a thank you note.  I remember a time when I wanted to thank my personal references, I sent them a gift to let each person I know that I appreciated them going to bat for my cause.

The reasons must be sincere.  The impact is long lasting.  The cost is about five bucks plus stamps and a little more time.  Do not forget to do the little things that can pay off in a big way. These days, with a tough economy, rising unemployment and uncertainty everywhere, you might be thanking yourself for sending a thank you note.
