I like your first point. In a society where we are bombarded with the message that it is "always about the money," it isn't always about the money. If we produce events to build relationships, the money will come on the back end!

Hopefully discussions like these will push more athletes to take their "off-the-field" training more seriously. While we can all point to examples of athletes who are "doing it right" or doing it horribly wrong, there are so many more in the middle -- athletes who are not necessarily doing anything to damage their reputations, but who could be doing exponentially more to enhance their brand image and ultimately, their marketability.

Charles, thanks so much for having us as a part of your 10 Questions series! You're right, it's about the entire solution - on and off the field of play. It is amazing how many athletes will spend tremendous amounts on taking care of their bodies but not their reputations. And we won't even get into the amounts spent on material things that depreciate...

William, you are correct. Jeter is the shining example of "the guy who just gets it right." He completely understands what it takes and what is required of him and has from an early age. Great SI piece on him last month when he won Sportsman of the Year.

Great site Charles! Great resource for all!

I have been working with athletes for years and could not agree more. it is about the entire solution, not just between the lines

It was wonderful working with you, Charles! Think it's important for all athletes to know their training off the field in terms of traditional and social media, crisis communications, etc. is important too.

One name not mentioned, but in my opinion is the epitome of perfection when it comes to handling the media and himself is Derek Jeter. He chooses endorsements wisely, stays out of the limelight - even when getting engaged to an actress, and handles "crisis" with utmost care (A-Rod comments of Jeter being overrated)....all the while playing in the biggest spotlight in sports.
