Sports Management Program – York College

Today is a feature on a sports management program — York College of Pennsylvania.  We ask some questions about their program but what is interesting is that they sent us two videos they are using to help connect and to recruit students to their campus.  A very wise use of social media for today’s college students.  I have inserted both videos for your review.  Here is their sports management program

Tell us About Your Program: The mission of the Sport Management program encompasses the following: to provide an environment rich in academics and in the field experiences oriented toward developing broad-based leadership skills in the many areas of the sport industry, not limited to but including, ticket sales, management, sport media, and entrepreneurship. The courses are taught by faculty members that integrate practical application as part of the course requirements. When students graduate they feel they have a baseline of experience and leadership ability to be successful in the industry.

What Makes the Program Unique?: The Sport Management program at York College of Pennsylvania is unique because of its comprehensive and interdisciplinary design. The program recognizes the varied career opportunities in the field of sport and prepares students by requiring them to take courses reflective of the breadth of the sport management field. In addition, the program requires a nine-credit work experience and the completion of an elective sequence (which most are minors) in an additional academic discipline. The courses are very practical in nature.  We call what we are doing “Pracademics.”This is done by integrating businesses into the classroom and having the students do real world projects for these businesses.  The faculty is ahead of the curve on a number of fronts (ie. offering a required ticket sales course, integrating social media into courses).  There is an extensive internship database that is housed both online and in print, there is a large alumni database which contact us frequently looking to hire our students. Students have presented at International, National & regional conferences.

YCP Sport Managent has a great reputation around the country. I currently am getting my masters at Georgia State and other students have heard of our program. This is truly a testament to Dr. Newman and the rest of the staff. They treat the students like professionals and are more prepared for the real world. Great work Alumni and current students.

Coming to York College of Pennsylvania and being in the sport management program has allowed me to gain an excellent education in the class room along with the practical experience in the field. Being in my last semester I would recommend this program to any looking to go into sport management.

As an alum of the YCP Sport Management program, Dr. Newman and his staff do a great job of preparing students for the real world and make the transition from college much easier. I am currently working in the golf industry and after interacting with many interns nationwide – it is clear that the practical, hands-on work that YCP emphasizes is very beneficial. More and more alumni nationwide are building a very strong reputation for this program!

After being in the YCP Sport Management program for the past four years I would recommend it to anyone who is trying to gain a great education and remarkable work experience. The classes and practicum go further than just a textbook. They allow you to handle real life situations that you will face in the everyday sport world. I believe that the YCP Sport Management program is one of the top in the country.

I’m currently a junior in YCP’s sport management program, and what I like best about it is if a student joins the major not completely sure what they actually want to do in the sport world (which is very much normal), it truly is okay. We have such a wide range of classes that students have the opportunity to experience a little of everything. Some courses offered are Sport Marketing, Public/Media Relations in Sport, Ticket Operations/Negotiations and Facility/Event Management. The students learn more about various areas in the industry and find a better vision of what field they would like to pursue. I never would have guessed I would be writing sports articles for the Sports Information department, the school newspaper or any of my other writing projects if I wasn’t given the opportunity to learn about it – and pursue it – like I did with York College Sport Management.

Thanks for featuring us, Mr. Harris.

P.S. Those videos of our program are simply another one of the opportunities offered. Interested in sport media? You’ll learn about it at York College of Pa. (Am I pitching it well enough?)

I can safely say that the YCP Sport Management program is one of the best programs in the country. This is my second year in the program and every day is a new experience. The things we do here are practical as to what a Sport Management professional will potentially go through and really is a great tool for the future. I absolutely recommend York College for anyone interested in Sport Management.

Thank you for featuring us! The York College Sport Management Program gives students an excellent opportunity to get involved and learn about the business of sport through hands on and experiential learning. I have served on the Sport Management Student Association Executive Board for the last two and a half years and have had many opportunities through the SMSA and York College Sport Management program to branch out and meet professionals in my desired career path.

YCP Sport Management was the key to my success! I have worked with the Detroit Shock, Orlando Magic and Velocity Sports Performance. I would have never been able to get there without the help of the faculty at YCP and the opportunities they gave us. The program is great and unlike any other.

I transfered to York College this semester to become part of this program. One of the best qualities of this program is that the staff actually cares of the students, the students aren’t just another number or grade. The staff gives the students every advantage possible to help us become successful.

York College’s sport management program is a unique setup where you are given all the opportunites to do great things. The teachers and students are all dedicated and you are given all the necessary tools to succeed in the sports industry!

York College helped put a framework of what is possible together for me in Sport Management education. York is a program with wonderful scale, big enough to be a force in the school’s athletic department and regional marketplace, but small enough (and with dedicated professors) that personal attention and career development is a reality. Pracademics indeed!

I’m a YCP graduate and earned my degree in sport management. The amount of real world experience inside the classroom and on-campus with the inclusion of the Grumbacher Center is incomparable to any other program out there. The way the sport management program is integrated with the athletic program at YCP is a real lesson in event management, marketing, PR and customer relations to name a few. All of which are critical tools to have in the professional world today. After graduation I can see the program continues to be on the cutting edge with the use of social media and the addition of courses relative to today’s sporting world.

I actually just transferred to York College from another institution that also had sport management, I am very happy with my decision to transfer here. I noticed immediately how dedicated the staff and faculty are to giving students the best oppurtunity to gain in the field experience necessary to give their students the competitive edge when entering the work force. I highly reccommend York College to any incoming student wishing to pursue a career in the sport management field.

Although I have only been in the YCP Sport Management program for a couple weeks, I can already tell that it is very unique and different from other places. The professors are very informative and helpful and it is truly a great program to be in.

I’m in my final year of the sport management program at York and I must say it has been an exciting and interesting couple of years. I’ll admit at first I was a little intimidated but as time went on I realized that I had made the right decision coming here. The program is definitely not for kids that think it will be an easy degree, it requires a lot of hard work and a lot of critical thinking, which is really beneficial in the long run. The faculty really puts a lot of time and effort into making sure that all students succeed and are prepared for the real world, which I think is the reason we come to college.
